David’s Tea Fall Collection Review

Hey Steepers,

David’s released sample packs of the new fall teas this week for 5/$10. I bought 4 if the new teas, 2 of one as I already have pumpkin chai. The fall teas are usually my favourite, read below on how I think they stacked up this year. Here are my thoughts.

Pom Cider

Type: black tea

Ingredients: Fennel, hibiscus, black tea, rosehips, apple, orange, pomegranate, stevia extract, natural pomegranate flavouring.

“When the weather gets cool, nothing beats a hot cup of cider. It’s the kind of drink we look forward to cozying up after a long day of hiking. And this rustic twist on the fall classic is no different. With rich black tea, soothing fennel, apple and a fruity burst of fresh pomegranate, this sweet and slightly tart tea is five kinds of comforting. Hot, it’s a blend that warms the body and soul. Iced, it’s a lingering taste of summer. It’s so good, you’ll want to have it all year round”

This tea is tart, and that’s about it. It lacked the spice a cider should have in my opinion. Couldn’t really taste much other than the pomegranate flavour and hibiscus.

Cuppa tea? Meh. Good but not extravagant

Blueberry Muffin

Type: fruit

Ingredients: Apple (apple, citric acid), raisins, carrot, hibiscus blossoms, beetroot, yogurt bits (milk yogurt powder, sugar, maltodextrin, modified starch, citric acid), blueberries, cornflower blossoms, natural and artificial flavouring.

“How do we like to start our mornings? With a blueberry muffin of course. Rich, crumbly and downright irresistible, it’s the kind of snack that never fails to make us happy. And this fruity tisane is every bit as satisfying as the real thing. It’s got crisp apple, raisins, carrot and fresh blueberries. Not to mention yogurt bits for extra creaminess. Sweet, buttery and slightly tart, it’s the perfect treat to bring along on your next road trip or early work commute. And if you’re really feeling adventurous, try adding it to your oatmeal for an extra pop of flavour. Now that’s what we call the breakfast of champions.”

Tastes a lot like a blueberry muffin actually. It can also steep a bit tart so be careful not to steep too long. Might turn out as a nice latte.

Cuppa tea? If I’m in the mood. Not one I normally go for.

Nutty Granola Crunch

Type: rooibos

Ingredients: Apple, rooibos, almonds, coconut, brittle (sugar, hazelnuts, inverted sugar), natural and artificial flavouring.

“It’s no secret granola and the great outdoors are a match made in heaven. Known as the hippie health food of the 60s, this satisfying treat has quickly become the go-to snack of today’s hikers and backpackers. Why? Because it’s yummy, satisfying and the perfect way to fuel all your wild adventures. So if you go out in the woods today, be sure to bring this rich and nutty rooibos along with you. With apple, almonds, creamy coconut and sweet brittle, it’s like a granola bar in a cup!”

Many tea friends are right, it smells like peanuts. It actually tastes okay though. Very similar to peanut butter cup from last fall. Would make a good latte, and if you mix it with a chocolate tea it would be pretty good.

Cuppa tea? Not mine

Carrot cupcake

Type: rooibos

Ingredients: Apple, carrot, cinnamon, rooibos, cocoa shells, ginger, licorice root, natural whipped cream and apple flavouring

“You know what never fails to remind us of fall? A carrot cupcake. And we’re not the only ones who think so. Thanks to their natural sugar content, carrots have been used to sweeten cakes since the medieval times. And this decadent, creamy rooibos blend tastes just like your favourite carrot dessert. It’s got cinnamon and ginger for an extra zing of warmth. Plus carrots and apple to get that perfect fruity balance. Still not convinced? The rich cocoa shells and natural whipped cream flavour will change your mind. Yeah, we knew you couldn’t resist…”

This tea smells amazing, and I was most looking forward to this one. First cup I made was disgusting. I added milk and sugar and it was sour but not curdled. And I was so disappointed. Luckily I bought 2 carrot cupcake packets and so I tried to make it again, didn’t steep it as long and drank it straight. Its so good! Glad I gave it another shot. Its got a sweet, cinnamon flavour with hints of apple, carrot and nutmeg.

Cuppa tea? Yes

Pumpkin Chai

Type: black

Ingredients: Black tea, cinnamon, cloves, caramel (milk, sugar, glucose syrup, butter, sorbitol, mono and diglycerides), carrot, lemon peel, pumpkin candies (sugar, rice flour, cottonseed oil, soybean oil, corn starch, gum arabic, cellulose gum, yellow 6, confectioner

“Let’s face it, the best thing about fall is pumpkin pie. And this spiced black tea is arguably just as delicious. It’s got all the warmth of cinnamon and cloves, plus the sweetness of caramel and pumpkin candy. For a true autumn treat, top it up with steamed milk and stir in a spoonful of brown sugar. It’ll make you wish it were fall all year round.”

The classic. Nothing new it comes out every year for the last 5 years. Its a black tea with cinnamon, pumpkin sprinkles, and pumpkin bits. This tea always has beautiful collection tins though so definitely check those out.

Cuppa tea? Yes definitely.

Overall this collection sounded great to me, but I’m going to wait for the pumpkin collection. These teas for the most part were not my cuppa tea.

Thanks for reading. What are your thoughts?

Review: Steeped Tea Fall Launch Kit

Hey Steepers,

As promised here is my thoughts on some of the new teas coming out for the Fall/Winter 2016 Steeped Tea Catalog. I will be reviewing the teas in the consultant launch kit and then I will do another post in the future when I order some of the other new teas (see French Toast oolong!). Here we go!

Drop That Sweet Beet Green Tea

This tea smells like a light amaretto. It comes out slightly pink and is a really nice tea to sip. Its very smooth, and I was pleasently surprised. Definitely get your hands on this one. its a very sophisticated flavour, smells amazing, and is a nice balanced tea.  $10/50g

Ingredients: Green tea, sultanas (sultanas, sunflower oil [anti-caking agent]), almond bits, apple bits, date bits (dates, rice flour), beetroot bits, rose blossom leaves, natural flavors. Contains almonds. May contain other tree nuts.

Buttered Popcorn Green/Black tea

This is a green black blend with bits of popcorn and cornflower petals. I love green black blends because you get the best of two classics in a nice smooth blend, thinking about ST Eggnoggin’ tea which combines the two types beautifully. They work very well together. This tea on my first try I thought it was super plain, had very little flavour (honestly in my mind I was comparing it to DT caramel corn, but that’s not a fair comparison as that tea is an herbal/fruit blend plus it has added sugar). So I gave Buttered popcorn another try and Its is much better steeped at a cooler temperature for a little less time. I added sugar and milk but this would be great with cream to really bring out the buttery flavours. $10/50g

Ingredients: Green tea, black tea, black currant leaves, popcorn, natural flavors.

Pumpkin Pie Rooibos Tea

So if you know me you know I absolutely love Pumpkin everything. Last year I was a little disappointed by the DT pumpkin collection aside from the classic Pumpkin Chai but Steeped Tea pulled through for me and I got to enjoy the delicious blends we offer. Pumpkin Spice Latte and Chocolate Pumpkin Chai are some of my favourite fall teas  as well as the exclusive pumpkin matcha and pumpkin spice hot chocolate offerred last year. So naturally I was stoked to try this new rooibos blend incorporating my love of pumpkin pie! I gotta say well done Steeped Tea! This tea has that warm rich taste from rooibos (bonus its caffeine free so you can satisfy that late night craving without the caffeine boost from the black tea pumpkin blends) and has a nice flavour. The fact that it’s a rooibos with the deep orange-red colour makes it all the better. Make this tea into a latte and you will never miss the discontinued DT Pumpkin Cheesecake (one of my all time faves from DT and I am savouring my stash.) This is a must try if you are a pumpkin lover. $8.50/50g

Ingredients: Rooibos tea, safflowers, natural pumpkin flavor.

Peach Caramel Cobbler Rooibos Tea

I am not a huge fan of peach teas in any form, other than herbal/fruit but ST does dessert type rooibos teas very well. See above tea. I also love that there’s popped amaranth in the blend. It just looks so cool. Its a nice treat to sip on this one and its totlly latte worthy. $8.50/50g

Ingredients: Rooibos tea, popped amaranth, white cornflower petals, peach pieces, natural flavors

Tutti Frutti Black Tea

This is the best strawberry black tea I have had in a while, maybe ever. It tastes lovely and frutti, and i would say is a contender with Love Tea #7 from DT. This one really has everything I am looking for with a strawberry tea. it has all the flavour, the black tea keeps it grounded and with a hint of sweetener it really shines. I would also reccomend this tea iced with some cut up strawberries like a strawberry version of classic iced tea. I was very impressed by this blend. $8.50/50g

Ingredients: Black tea, strawberry pieces, natural flavors.

Tummy Troubles Wellness Herbal Tea

This tea smelled amazing When I was scooping it and brewing it. It tastes really nice too. It does however come out a deep purple almost black colour which is kind of neat. It is an herbal tea with literally all the feel good, beneficial herbs for your digestion. Anti Inflammatory, cinnamon, calming ginger, fennel, it really is a winner. Steeped tea does wellness teas incredibly well and they always taste delightful. No dirt flavour like you  might think of a tea that’s purely health beneficial, they all taste warm, and calming. I enjoyed this in a warm bath with epsom salts and lavender essential oil. I am excited to try it when I have an upset stomach to actually feel the benefits. $11/50g

Ingredients:  Cinnamon, hibiscus blossoms, orange peels, peppermint leaves, licorice root, lemon peels, ginger pieces, chamomile blossoms, orange blossoms, fennel seeds, lemon balm, lemongrass, aniseed

Lemon Vanilla Mate Tea

I am not a huge fan of mate teas but usually when they’re mixed with rooibos it goes over well. This tea is a deep, earthy green mate with red rooibos and lemongrass. It tastes almost exactly like DT Detox but has a lighter flavour and I could actually drink this. (DT detox is pretty nasty tasting) I wish this tea was sweeter with a more prominent vanilla flavour but definitely is gonna be some of your cup of tea! $8/50g

Ingredients: Maté tea, rooibos tea, lemongrass, calendula petals, natural flavors.

We’ve perfected everyone’s favorite Fall treat. Made with black tea. 12 servings. $12

What’s in my bag? Hiking Essentials

Hey friends,

Here’s a little post about what I take with me on a day hike.  This is the very basics and you can adjust to your needs. I like to keep it simple and waste free.  On hikes I live by the mantra: take only pictures,  leave only footprints,  especially in natural preservation conservation areas this is extremely important.

Small backpack

I like small day packs from outdoor equipment stores but those can get pricey so use whatever you have around or check out this diy video I used to make my backpack:

Some features to look for in a daypack are easy access water bottle pocket on the sides or a hydration pack, ergonomic straps, a sternum or waist strap is also great for added back support and weight distribution, lightweight, water resistant fabric, an easy access pocket for keys and phone- you never know when you’ll need to snap a pic of a deer or rare bird. Check these out

Water bottle

A reusable water bottle is probably one of the best waste free items you can invest in, and they are pretty affordable.  I really like ones that have a handle that you  can clip to your bag or carry easily over something like a Swell bottle that doesn’t have a hook.  My bottle is glass with silicone but those can be a bit heavier so stainless steel or triton bottles  are a lighter, less expensive option.

Other options:

I also brought some iced tea with me in my carry mug from David’s tea.  I really love the carry mugs because they are high quality extremely functional and versatile in use.  Plus the bright colours are a fun bonus https://www.davidstea.com/ca_en/seafoam-carry-travel-mug

I like to bring a granola bar or protein bar. Some other great snacks would be protein/energy balls, trail mix, an apple, or a full lunch with a sandwich and veggie and hummus. Everything in waste-free, reusable containers of course.

Lara Bars or Cliff Bars are a great filling snack made with natural organic ingredients. Homemade ones in waste-free containers are even better.

Depending on how long you’ll be out you should also consider bringing the following items

  • Battery pack/ portable phone charger for emergency use or if you end up taking a bunch of pictures. Mine is from here: Insignia 5200mAH Power BankInsignia 5200mAH Power Bank
  • Mini first aid kit or bandaids and hand sanitizer, you never know when you’ll get a blister or scrape your knee
  • Rain Jacket, poncho or sweater. The weather can change on a dime without warning. I use this compact Rain shell that fits in a little pouch and keep it in my car. Buy Here: Torrent Womens Waterproof Jacket Purple

Sun Protection

That last essential thing to bring with you on a hike is sun protection! I use the Badger Kids sunscreen (it smells like orange creamsicles!) and is 98% organic, biodegradable and not tested on animals! Buy natural sunscreens here: Vitacost Cruelty Free Sunscreen A hat and sunglasses are also a good idea.

Tangerine Vanilla Sunscreen

Thank you so much for reading. Here are some pictures from my hike! I hope you’ve been inspired to get out and enjoy nature and see what beautiful  places your city has to offer.
